Capture the Moment

All photos were created with light-sensitive film rolls before digital photography was invented. Film photographers developed the rolls, then printed their photos in a darkroom. This physical process allows artists to get close to photography. The film photography project allows you to control image exposure and shutter speed. Artists can also print and enlarge images to better understand how photos are made.

Film can be a wonderful way to learn about the art of photography but it requires a lot more trial and error. Digital photography is very easy to learn. You can’t take a photo and not know the settings. It’s possible to get the perfect photo, but not know why. Digital allows you to go back and review the metadata to see which shutter speed and f-stop you used,” Ryan Mills, photographer.

  • Film Cameras

A roll of light-sensitive film can be placed inside the camera during film photography project. The film is exposed to the light when the shutter is opened. An impression is then taken. The photographer then rolls the film backwards so that a new section of film can be used for the next shot. Some manual cameras allow you to roll the film backwards and create double exposures by shooting over the same section of film multiple times. Once the film is finished, it can be removed from the camera and developed.

“Digital cameras don’t matter what brand they are, so your image will look almost identical, no matter which brand it is,” Mills says. Mills Film Photography Project says that it is difficult to identify the origin of a camera when people begin editing photos. However, film is different because the cameras and film have different looks. They all work slightly differently.

Single Lens Reflex (SLR), a camera that uses a mirror and prism for film photography, is a popular choice. These cameras have an inner working that allows photographers to view the viewfinder and lens through which they can see the contents of the frame. There are three types of SLR cameras: 35mm, medium, and large formats. These formats refer to the physical film size that can be fit in the camera.

There are many options when it comes to film. You can buy both 35mm and 120 medium format films. You might have heard the terms 120 format and 220 format. Mills explains that they are the same medium format film but of different lengths. You can take more photographs with a longer roll of film before you replace it. Mills notes that 120 film can take 10-12 shots, while 220 film can take 22-24 shots.
